Spanish air force jets air-dropped 26 tons of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip today, and Madrid asked Israel to open land crossings to avoid a famine, the country’s foreign ministry said.

The operation, carried out in coordination with Jordan and co-funded by the European Union, dropped more than 11,000 food rations in order to alleviate the “catastrophic levels of food insecurity” facing up to 1.1 million people in Gaza, the ministry emphasizes in a statement.

“Spain insists on the opening of land crossings as a necessary measure in order to avoid a famine situation,” it added.

Other Western countries, including the US, France and Germany, are also carrying out airdrops to distribute aid to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, following nearly six months of war between Israeli forces and Hamas militants.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to support UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for the Palestinians, in order to continue to exist.
