The repair works are estimated to last several months, according to the management company
Two thermal power plants in western Ukraine have been heavily damaged by Russian missile attacks last week, and repair work is expected to take several months, according to the operator.
The director of the energy company DTEK Dmytro Zakharuk said that some units of the thermal power plants in Burstin and Vinnytsia were completely destroyed. The two plants have a total capacity of 4.2 GW.
It will take months – “12, 24 or more” – to repair the damage, Zaharuk said, noting that the project will be difficult to complete without international support. It is estimated that almost $200 million is needed to replace the equipment alone.
The head of DTEK claimed that last Friday’s missile attacks were the worst since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Due to Russian bombardment, the thermal power station in Kurakhovo, Donetsk region, has also been put out of operation.
Russian forces have repeatedly launched attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Electricity grid operator Ukrenergo has been forced to impose scheduled power outages in the Kharkiv region, while problems are occurring in the Odesa and Khmelnytskyi distribution networks. Ukraine currently imports electricity from five neighboring countries.
