This is the most successful gathering of political donations in American history, the Washington Post reports
The record amount of 25 million dollars was collected by the pre-election campaign of the American president, Joe Biden, at yesterday’s event in New York, which was attended by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
It is “the most successful political fundraiser in American history,” the Washington Post reports.
More than 5,000 people attended the sold-out event at New York’s Radio City Music Hall with guests paying between $225 and $500,000. The massive support for Biden’s campaign comes as his allies say they have a growing financial advantage in the race against former President Donald Trump.
Top donors at the event had access to perks like a photo with the three presidents. Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz created donor portraits with Biden, Clinton and Obama with her camera.
The three presidents were greeted with applause while Clinton and Obama turned to praise Joe Biden before taking their seats.
By the way, Dark Brandon is real,” Biden said at the end of the program, which was highlighted by the appearance of the three men in dark aviator glasses impersonating Biden’s alter-ego.
The event closed with footage of Biden campaigning in the wake of his fiery State of the Union address on March 7.
If Democratic voters as a whole are wary of Biden’s political positions, the event in New York, writes the Washington Post, offered a moment of joy. The event featured musicians such as Queen Latifah, Lizzo and Ben Platt. Host Mindy Kaling joked during the event that it was nice to be in a room “with so many rich people.” An after party for 500 VIP guests was co-hosted by First Lady Jill Biden and DJ D-Nice.
For the evening’s main event, comedian Stephen Colbert moderated a conversation between Biden, Obama and Clinton. The event was also full of tension as pro-Palestine protesters started shouting and disrupting the event. A large crowd of protesters also gathered outside the venue to express their displeasure over Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza, some of whom clashed with police.
