The DUP announced it had received a letter of resignation from Mr Donaldson, who was also suspended from the party
London, Thanasis Gavos
Police in Northern Ireland have arrested Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader and House of Commons MP Sir Geoffrey Donaldson.
According to the BBC, the 61-year-old politician faces charged with rape and multiple other sexual offenses. The investigation against him reportedly began in recent months following complaints from two women.
A 57-year-old woman was also arrested with him and after questioning was charged with aiding and abetting Sir Jeffrey.
The DUP announced it had received a letter of resignation from Mr Donaldson, who was additionally made available by the party.
MP Gary Robinson has already been appointed interim leader.
Sir Geoffrey Donaldson said he denies the allegations. He will appear in court at the end of April.
Overnight he deleted all his social media accounts.
As a member of the central House of Commons (since 1997) Mr Donaldson does not hold office in the devolved government of Northern Ireland. But he was instrumental in the recent lifting of the two-year deadlock that allowed the DUP’s joint government with Sinn Fein to reopen, which for the first time has emerged as the largest party in Northern Ireland.
In 2006 he was honored with the title of Sir for his political services.
