The rockets caused only material damage
The residence of the prime minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNA), Abdulhamid al-Dabaiba, was targeted by an attack with self-propelled grenades (RPGs) on Sunday, but there were no casualties, a GNA minister told Reuters news agency.
The minister, who spoke on condition of anonymity, assured that the rockets only caused material damage. He did not specify who launched them.
Two residents of Tripoli confirmed that they heard loud explosions in a seaside district where a luxury hotel and Prime Minister Dbayba’s residence are located. One added that strong forces were then deployed in the area.
In Libya, peace and stability remain elusive after the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. The country remains divided, with two governments in the western and eastern parts of the country and a myriad of armed groups vying for power and influence.
The KEE was formed following a UN-backed process in 2021, but the parliament, which is based in the eastern part of the country, stopped recognizing it at the end of the same year, following the failure of the attempt to hold elections, which deepened even more the political impasse.
In early March, three influential politicians agreed that it was a “necessity” to form a new, unity government to oversee the long-awaited election. But Mr Dbayba says he will not hand over power before elections are held.
