Hackers break into Russian prison system’s online hub where family members buy food for inmates
A few hours after the death of the leader of the Russian opposition Alexei Navalny in February in a Siberian Russian prison, a group of hackers decided to take revenge with heaps of different ways.
Using the access they had to a computer network connected to the Russian prison system, the hackers posted a photo of Navalny on the prison contractor’s websiteaccording to CNN interviews with the hackers, screenshots and data reviewed by the US network.
“Long live Alexei Navalny!” said the message on the hacked website, accompanied by a photo of Navalny and his wife Yulia at a political rally.
Unprecedented security breaching, it seems too that they stole a database containing information on hundreds of thousands of Russian prisoners and their relatives and contacts, including, the hackers claim, data held on prisoners in the Arctic penal colony where Navalny died on February 16.
Hackers, who claim that they are a mix of nationalities, including Russian expatriates and Ukrainiansshared that data, including phone numbers and email addresses of inmates and their relatives “in the hope that someone can contact them and help understand what happened to Navalny”a hacker who claims to be involved in the breach told CNN.
“The boss has gone mad”
Furthermore, hackers used their access to the online hub of the Russian prison systemwhere family members buy food for prisoners, to change the prices of items such as pasta and canned beef to a ruble, which is about $0.01, according to screenshots and videos of purchases from the online store posted by the hackers.
Normally, these goods cost over 1 dollar.
It took several hours for the administrator of the online prison store to notice that the Russians were buying food for… crumbs, according to the hacker involved. It also took three days before IT staff at the prison store were able to completely stop the … discounts provided by the hackers, according to the hacker’s account.
