The relevant law that will allow the Israeli prime minister to close the Arab network is ratified in the parliament in the evening
The Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revived moves today to shut down Qatari satellite television station Al Jazeera in the Israelsaying through a spokesman for his party that parliament would convene in the evening to ratify the necessary law.
Netanyahu will then “take immediate steps to shut down Al Jazeera in compliance with the procedure outlined in the law,” his statement said Likud party. There was no immediate comment from the station’s headquarters or the Qatari government at Doha.
Since the outbreak of war in Gaza on October 7, Doha has brokered ceasefire talks in which Israel has recovered some of the hostages taken by Hamas.
Negotiations for a second proposed armistice seem to be going nowhere, however. In January, Netanyahu publicly called for more pressure to be put on the Qataris to pressure Hamas in turn. Qatar hosts the organization’s political office and several high-ranking Hamas officials.
Meanwhile, Israel’s views on the Al Jazeera have become tougher. Israel’s communications minister accused the station on October 15 of pro-Hamas incitement as well as exposing Israeli troops to ambushes. Al Jazeera and the Doha government did not respond to those allegations.
The following month, however, Israel appeared to take a less hard line against the Qatari station, instead ordering a halt to local broadcasts by a smaller pro-Iranian Lebanese channel, Al Mayadeen, under emergency media regulations.
