EU immediately mobilizes emergency energy aid for Ukraine, following Russia’s targeted attacks on energy infrastructure
The EU is immediately mobilizing emergency energy aid for Ukraine, following Russia’s targeted missile and drone attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent weeks.
“Ukraine’s electricity supply has suffered significant damage,” the European Commission said in a statement, and the EU is now mobilizing emergency emergency aid on its way to Ukraine in response to the crisis.
Specifically, following Ukraine’s request for assistance, Austria, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands offered 157 generators through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. To further strengthen the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the EU has also deployed 10 large power generators (1MW) from its own strategic reserves, through the European civil protection mechanism – rescEU, worth €3.57 million. Each of these powerful 1 MW generators is capable of providing electricity to a medium-sized hospital under emergency conditions.
Commissioner for Crisis Management Jans Lenarcic said: “Russia’s plan to plunge Ukraine into darkness will not succeed. The EU is working around the clock to maintain Ukraine’s electricity supply. We are sending a new batch of power generators to Ukraine from our rescEU stocks, which have already proven to be a critical tool in responding to urgent needs in war-torn Ukraine.”
