Due to rising water levels, 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes by tonight
More than 300 homes were flooded in the Russian city of Orenburg after the Ural River rose half a meter above the overflow point, officials said today, as fast-melting snow in the Ural Mountains has caused the worst flooding in decades.

Water from melting snow has flooded areas in the Ural Mountains, western Siberia and Kazakhstan, which are close to rivers such as the Urals and Tobol, prompting 100,000 people to evacuate their homes so far the evening.
The authorities announced that the situation is dangerous in Orenburgwhere the water level in the Urals, Europe’s third largest river, had risen by 50cm early this morning, a few hours after reaching the critical height of 9.3 meters late last night, Tuesday.
“The night was restless,” said the first deputy mayor of Orenburg Alexei Kudinov according to the state news agency RIA.
Experts say the worst is yet to come for Orenburg, a city of about 550,000. The water level of the Urals, which flows through Russia and Kazakhstan and empties into the Caspian, may rise by another 70 centimeters by tomorrow, Thursday.
Over the weekend, the Ural River breached an embankment dam in the city of Orsk in Orenburg Oblast, the administrative center of which is the city of Orenburg. In Kurgan, a city on the Tobol River in the southern Urals, sirens warned people to evacuate immediately. District officials said floodwaters would continue to rise for three days and predicted “the situation will be difficult” until the end of April.
Local authorities announced today that they have closed roads in the region to quickly transport earth to reinforce a dam in the area, as the forecast for flooding has worsened and Tobol’s water level rose by 23cm in a short period of time.
