US prosecutors want to try Assange on 18 charges, all but one under the Espionage Act, for leaking classified military and diplomatic records and cables
US President Joe Biden said today that he is “considering” Australia’s request to stop the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who leaked thousands of classified US documents.
In February, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese backed a resolution put forward in parliament calling for Assange, 52, to be returned to his country. US officials are seeking Assange’s extradition from Britain to the USwhere he is wanted.
“We’re looking into it” Biden said when asked by a reporter if he had any response to Australia’s request.
In a post on Platform X, addressing Biden, Assange’s wife wrote: “Do the right thing. Drop the charges.”
Assange’s extradition was “frozen” in March after the High Court in London ruled that the US should give guarantees that he will not be given the death penalty.
