At least eight people died in a new migrant boat sinking in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, Italian authorities said.

According to Italy’s port authority, a vessel carrying at least 30 people capsized some 30 nautical miles (55 kilometers) southeast of the island of Lampedusa in international waters.

Despite the difficult conditions, patrol boats collected several castaways, the Italian coast guard continued, adding that some died of hypothermia while being transported to Lampedusa.

The Italian authorities reported last night that they counted 23 survivors who were taken to the Italian island, between Sicily and Tunisia.

However, the ANSA news agency reported that one of the 23 succumbed, raising the death toll from the wreck to nine, adding that six more people were in intensive care. One of the victims was a small child, according to Italian authorities.

The circumstances of the fatal wreck are unclear. There is conflicting information on the number of missing persons. It is not yet clear where the vessel had sailed from.

Migrant boats often make the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean from Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

The number of migrants trying to reach Europe by sea is on the rise again this year. Italy’s interior ministry already counts over 150,000 undocumented migrant arrivals since the start of the year.
