Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called Biden’s statement “encouraging.”
“I believe this must end and that Mr Assange has already paid a heavy price. Enough,” Albanese said.
“There is nothing to be gained from Assange’s continued imprisonment, and I have put that as the Australian government’s view.”
Assange’s lawyer called Biden’s statements “encouraging,” while WikiLeaks editor Christine Hraffson said it’s “not too late” to stop his extradition.
The 52-year-old faces prosecution in the US on charges of conspiring to obtain and release national defense information about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
