Simpson became one of the most notorious figures in the US during his trial in the 1990s for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her lover Ronald Goldman.
The couple were stabbed to death outside the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on the night of June 12, 1994.
The trial lasted eleven months, from 9 November 1994 to 3 October 1995.
Simpson was acquitted and the verdict divided American public opinion.
After the trial, Goldman’s father filed a civil suit against Simpson.
On February 4, 1997, the panel unanimously found Simpson responsible for both deaths.
The Goldman family was awarded damages and compensation totaling $33.5 million ($61.1 million in 2022 dollars).
In 2000, Simpson left California for Florida, one of the few states where personal assets such as homes and pensions cannot be seized to cover liabilities in other states.
