Kosovo denies reports of mercenaries being sent to eastern Ukraine

by

Sergei Lavrov’s allegations that “mercenaries from Kosovo” are being sent to the Donbas region of Ukraine have been rejected by the Kosovo government. A statement from the Foreign Ministry stated that “Kosovo law prohibits the participation of Kosovo nationals in wars abroad”.

It is noted that “these allegations are part of Russian propaganda to support Russian hegemony.” Kosovo’s foreign minister estimates that “Russia, with the help of Serbia, is leading a campaign against Kosovo and other countries in the Western Balkans with the aim of destabilizing the region.” It is noted that Sergei Lavrov told the Russian television network RT on February 18 that information was being sent to send mercenaries from Ukraine to the Western Balkans. “There are reports that mercenaries are being recruited in Kosovo, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina to destabilize Russia, they are being sent to various places, including Donbass,” he said.

The government in Pristina recently expressed its solidarity with Kiev and formally stated its intention to place units of the Kosovo Army under US military command if military action is needed in Ukraine.

The issue of sending mercenaries from the Western Balkans to eastern Ukraine also concerns the political leadership of Serbia. Republic President Aleksandar Vuτςiτς told the Tanjug news agency that there was currently no information from the Serbian security services on mercenaries from the Balkans, but added: “If some great leaders know a lot, Lavrov knows everything.” Vuτςiτς said that this information would be investigated and announced the arrival in Belgrade in the coming days of the Secretary General of the National Security Council of Russia Nikolai Petrushev.

Today, the President of Serbia convened an extraordinary meeting of the Supreme National Security Council to discuss – as mentioned in the announcement – issues concerning Eastern Europe and the situation in the Western Balkans.
