After Eunice Franklin: Floods and problems cause new strong storm in Britain

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

Thousands of people in the Sproutbroy area of south Yorkshire in the north-east of England and in Dinsbury in the greater Manchester area were forced to evacuate their homes on Sunday night when the Don and Mersey rivers overflowed.

Residents in Londonderry and Tyrone counties in Northern Ireland, where the Drumrah and Finn rivers overflowed, received similar instructions.

The floods are the result of Hurricane Franklin hitting areas of the UK since Sunday night, the third strongest storm in the country in a week after Hurricane Dudley and the strongest of all, Hurricane Younis.

Flood protection dams have also had to be built in areas where the Severn River flows through the west of the country.

At the same time in England 175 flood warnings were issued, which means that floods were expected and 172 flood alarms, which means that a flood was considered possible.

Hurricane Franklin was accompanied, mainly at night, from very strong winds, with the Meteorological Service issuing an orange warning for danger to our lives due to winds in Northern Ireland – a warning issued at 7 a.m. local time. In many parts of Britain, milder yellow warnings are in effect until early in the afternoon.

Several railway companies have canceled morning services or imposed speed limits on trains, urging passengers to avoid train travel.

Meanwhile, more than 50,000 households in the UK were left without electricity this morning, mainly in the south-east of England.

Hurricane Franklin was accompanied by winds of about 95 kilometers per hour, while on the Isle of White a gust of wind was recorded at 140 kilometers per hour.

After the storms Dudley and Eunice is the first time three storms strong enough to be named by the meteorological service affect the United Kingdom within a week of 2015, when the weather naming system was launched.
