According to a study published yesterday on the JAMA Health Forum website
At USA was recorded a sharp increase in the number of sterilizations as a method of contraception after the constitutional guarantee of the right to abortion was repealed two years ago, a study released Friday suggested.
After that US Supreme Courtwhose composition was drastically changed by the former president Donald Trumprepealed the constitutional guarantee of the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy in 2022, some twenty states either outright banned or imposed draconian restrictions on access to procedures of this nature.
The issue of abortion has also become a central theme of the election campaign in the country, in view of the November 5 showdown between the Republican former president Donald Trump and to the Democratic outgoing president Joe Biden.
The study published yesterday on the website JAMA Health Forum indicates that the sterilization rate was already rising in the years before the historic federal Supreme Court decision, with 2.8 procedures per 100,000 women per month and 1 per 100,000 men.
But the decision sparked a dramatic rise, with 58 sterilization procedures per 100,000 women per month and 27 per 100,000 men, the study, which focused on the 18-30 age group, said.
After the initial shock of the reversal of the legal situation, the number of vasectomy among men gradually returned to the earlier trend, but tubal ligations among women remained far higher than before the Supreme Court decision, it is still highlighted .
This marked difference “probably reflects the fact that young women in most cases take responsibility for preventing pregnancy,” noted the study’s lead author, Dr. Jacqueline Ellison of the University of Pittsburgh.
And “they suffer disproportionately more from the health, social and economic consequences of abortion bans,” he added.
However, sterilization procedures, or permanent contraception, are more complicated and two to six times more expensive for women than for men, the study also noted.
In addition, reversal of sterilization requires much more complex surgical procedures for women than for men.
Polls show a majority of Americans still favor abortion rights, complicating matters for the Republican party just months before the November elections.
