Israeli strikes targeted a military position in southern Syria in the early hours, the Syrian Defense Ministry and a non-governmental organization said, as Israel launched an attack on Iran.

“Around 02:55 (local time and Greek time) the Israeli enemy launched an attack with the help of missiles (…) targeting our air defense positions in the south,” the Syrian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The same source spoke of “material” damages from the blows.

For its part, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights spoke of “Israeli strikes that had Syrian army radar target in Deraa province, which detected the entry of Israeli aircraft into Syrian airspace.

The director of the Observatory, Rami Abdel Rahman, which is based in Britain but has a large network of sources in Syria, added that the strikes occurred “while the Israeli Air Force was carrying out intensive flights in Deraa province”, without activating the Syrian air defense.

Rayan Maarouf, head of the Syrian online media outlet Suwayda 24, told AFP earlier that “strikes against Syrian army radars” in Deraa province, without specifying the origin of the wounds.

The Israeli military has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria since the country’s civil war began in 2011, mostly targeting pro-Iranian groups.
