The person who threatened to blow up the building of the Iranian consulate located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris has been arrested, according to the latest information from the French radio station Europe 1.

A heavy police force rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area and asked the public to avoid the area, according to Reuters, Europe 1 and videos posted on social media.

Military guards, the BRI (police selective intervention unit) and numerous firefighters are at the scene. The man, according to Europe 1, was hiding in the embassy in the presence of the Iranian ambassador and was allegedly wearing an explosive belt, equipped with a grenade-like object and threatening to detonate it.

“An eyewitness saw a man enter there holding a grenade or a vest with explosives,” according to a source from the police department.

“(Paris) police chief Laurent Núñez has mobilized the BRI,” an elite police unit, according to the same source, who said the consulate had submitted a “request for intervention.”

As a security measure and by order of Paris police headquarters, metro lines 6 and 9 were shut down and the area cordoned off.

According to the same sources, it was the embassy that contacted the prefecture of Paris to report the person’s presence and requested the intervention of the police.
