A secret and decisive encounter between Donald Trump’s envoys and Hamas leaders allegedly paved the way for the peace deal in Gaza, according to Axios’s revelation.
One of the obstacles to the agreement was the fear of Hamas leaders that Israel would bring the war as soon as the hostages were released.
In order to reach the deal, according to one of Axios’s sources, Steve Whitkov and Jared Kounsner had to meet Hamas’ leaders personally and assure them directly that Trump would not allow it, if the organization was.
In particular, the news network states that one day earlier, Trump had privately given Whitkov and Kouchner to meet Hamas leaders, if necessary to close the deal during their meeting at the Oval Office before their trip to Egypt.
After arriving at Sharm El-Siech, Witkov briefed the Qatarian, Egyptian and Turkish mediators about Trump’s “green light”.
Wednesday night, around 11 pm Local time, Qatarian mediators visited Witkov’s villa at the Four Seasons Hotel, saying that the negotiations had fallen into a deadlock and asked if the US envoys were ready to meet with Hamas, according to one sources.
“We believe that if you meet them and give them the hand, there will be an agreement,” said a senior Qatarian official to Witkov.
A few minutes later, Steve Whitkov and Jared Kouchner entered another villa at the Red Sea resort.
The leaders of the Egyptian and Turkish intelligence, senior Catarious officials and the Hamas leaders who participated in the negotiations were waiting. The head of the Hamas delegation was Halil al-Haya, who had survived an Israeli bombing attempt in Doha three weeks earlier.
In a meeting that lasted about 45 minutes, Witten told Hamas officials that hostages were now “more weight than advantage” for the organization. It was, as he said, the time to move on to the first phase of the agreement and to “return people to their homes on both sides of the border,” according to one sources.
Al-Haya asked if Whitkov and Kussner had a message from Trump.
“The message of President Trump is that you will be fair and that it supports all the 20 points of his peace plan, ensuring that they are fully implemented,” Witkov replied, according to the same source.
When the meeting was completed, Hamas’ leaders retired to another room with the Egyptian, Catarious and Turkish mediators. A few minutes later, the leader of the Egyptian intelligence services, Hassan Rasand, returned accompanied by his Turkish and cure counterparts.
“Based on the meeting we just had, we have an agreement,” Hassan Rasand told Whitkov and Kounsner.
It is noted that the meeting at Sharm El-Sieich was the second significant direct contact between the Trump government and Hamas.
In March, US Special Envoy on Homer’s issue, Adam Beller, had first meets with Hamas leaders in Doha in an attempt to secure the liberation of American Homer Efa Alexander and return the four.
The agreement had then collapsed in part because of the strong reaction of the Israeli government, which initially ignored the existence of direct negotiations.
Witten and Kouchner’s willingness to meet with Hamas’s leaders, despite political dangers, showed the organization that the United States were determined to reach and impose the agreement, according to one sources.
“So, when President Trump’s envoys gave their speech that the deal would be fully implemented, they believed them,” he added.
