The president of Ukraine puts restrictions on online gambling, Volodymyr Zelensky, including advertising limits and wartime gambling bans on soldiers.

According to Politico, the new regulations, placed in a decree of Ukraine’s State Security and Defense Council, came after activist and Ukrainian army officer Pavlo Petrichenko launched a campaign about soldiers’ gambling addiction and called on Zelensky to impose stricter checks on online casinos. Petrichenko died in battle on April 15.

“For many, gambling is the only thing way to cope with stress, and therefore quickly causes dopamine addiction and weakens their self-control,” Petrichenko argued in his report.

“There are cases of soldiers addicted to games they spend all their money on games and they take microloans, thus putting themselves and their families in debt,” he added.

The new rules will force gaming operators to limit the length of playing sessions, the number of accounts a user can register, as well as the amount a person can bet each day.

The restrictions will take effect in a month.
