Trump allegedly violated an order barring him from commenting on witness, juror and attorney testimony on at least 10 separate occasions this month
Faced with a charge of breaching a banning order from publicly commenting on witnesses and court staff is, among others, the former president of the USA, Donald Trump.
Prosecutors argue that Trump violated an order barring him from commenting on witness statements, juries and lawyers in at least 10 different cases this month. They asked Judge Juan Merchan to fine the former president $10,000.
“The accused has shown his reluctance to comply with the order. He has attacked witnesses in the case in the past,” prosecutor Christopher Conroy told Judge Merchan last week. “We ask the court to remind the defendant that further breaches of the court’s order could result in jail time.”
The former president is on trial in New York on a felony charge of falsifying business records to hide money his then-lawyer Michael Cohen gave to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Prosecutors said that on seven occasions this month Trump has violated the order through social media posts citing potential witnesses Cohen or Daniels. At the same time, on two occasions on his online campaign, information about Cohen was republished, while on one occasion Trump mentioned that “undercover liberal activists” were trying to infiltrate the case.
In Five out of ten violations Trump or his staff republished a New York Post article which argued that the case was based on the testimony of “serial sorcerer” Michael Cohen.
“We believe it is important for the court to remind Mr. Trump that he is a criminal defendant and, like all defendants, is subject to judicial oversight and, in particular, to this court’s duty to uphold the integrity of the Criminal Justice System. System”said the Conroy.
Last Monday, prosecutors asked that he be fined $3,000 after flagging three posts on Trump’s social media. By Thursday, prosecutors had identified seven additional violations, including some that Trump appeared to publish from inside the court during his trial.
