UK defense spending will rise to 2.5% of GDP by 2030, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced from Warsaw, where he met with his counterpart Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Mr Sunak said this target would be achieved by a steady increase in funding each year, to a total of £75bn over the next six years.
At the moment, including the new military support package for Ukraine also announced by Rishi Sunak, the UK spends 2.3% of GDP on defence.
As the British prime minister noted in explaining his decision, hostile countries are causing “more instability, faster, in more areas, at the same time.”
He added that the increased spending makes the UK the largest military power in Europe and the second largest in NATO.
Among other details, he said it puts the country’s defense industry “on a war footing”, as the lesson from the war in Ukraine is that there must be sufficient production of ammunition and weapons.
He also referred to the use of new technologies and innovations in the defense industry, such as the new laser weapon that Britain has tested against aerial targets.
In his remarks with Mr. Stoltenberg by his side, Mr. Sunak also emphasized the need to continue supporting Ukraine against Putin’s Russia.
In this context he formalized the new package of financial aid of 500 million pounds for military use from Kiev, as well as the shipment of ships, missiles and vehicles from the United Kingdom.
