The British Royal Navy ship HMS Diamond on Wednesday shot down a ballistic missile fired by Houthi rebels from Yemen in the Gulf of Aden region.
As UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps noted, it was the first time a British warship had intercepted a missile in the context of hostile action since the 1991 Gulf War.
The British crew activated the Sea Viper missile system to shoot down the missile in order to protect a merchant ship.
Meanwhile, the British Foreign Office announced a second round of sanctions against Iranian interests, two individuals and four legal entities, following Tehran’s April 13 attack on Israel.
The new sanctions focus on Iran’s drone and missile industries and are being imposed in coordination with the US and Canada.
Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron spoke of a “clear message” from London and its allies that those responsible for Iran’s “destabilizing” behavior in the region “will be held to account”.
