The German press comments on French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech from the Sorbonne.
Speaking from the Sorbonne the Frenchman President Emmanuel Macron he spoke of a Europe “that can die”, which is “in a state of encirclement”, calling on the EU to further strengthen its defense capabilities.
“What is Macron doing? He says and says and says. […] The biggest problem with Macron’s presentation of ideas is that he is not speaking as Europe’s leading thinker, but primarily as the president of France, and therefore cannot be limited to making demands and in adopting the attitude of a xerolabut it must also propose solutions”, she criticizes SZ.
THE Handelsblatt however, he seems to agree more with the French president: “In Macron’s worldview, the Europeans increasingly surrounded by hostile forces, both economically and militarily. In Germany, Macron’s vision is not always taken seriously. And then the Frenchman shows up as a geopolitical buffoon, who is good at big words and not at works.
With his analysis, however, Macron is closer to reality than the federal government, which does not yet really want to realize how much the future of Europe and with it Germany itself is at stake right now.
[…] Macron has not thoroughly studied all his plans for a “strong Europe”. […] However, the president has clearly recognized the challenges of the 21st century – and is also willing to accept the consequences. In Berlin, on the other hand, there are no corresponding ambitions“, concludes the financial audit.
