“We were asked and we explained why we cannot do it,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis said yesterday, speaking to Sia Kosionis and the main SKAI news bulletin
Her defense minister Germanys, Boris Pistorius recently stated that he does not understand why the Hellas and the Spain refuse to reinforce the Kyiv with missiles as reported by Politico.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis clarified yesterday, speaking to Sia Kosionis and the main SKAI news bulletin, that Greece is not going to send Ukraine either S-300 or Patriot, confirming however that “we were asked and we explained why we cannot do it”.
As the Prime Minister said, “Greece has supported Ukraine in various ways, with defense material. But we have said from the first moment that we cannot dispose of weapons systems which are critical to our deterrent capability.
We have surplus material with which we can support Ukraine, we have done so and I think it is the right choice. And, to the extent that we can find such material, we will continue to do so.
However, the air defense systems to which you referred are critical systems for the protection of Greek airspace and will not be granted to Ukraine.”
As Politico comments, Athens refuses to commit to the delivery of missiles for security reasons as the government is concerned about Turkey’s intentions.
Today, around 50 leaders will hold US-led video conference talks on coordinating further military aid to Ukraine.
