A spokesman for the US administration said today Friday that the White House “looks forward to welcoming the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a time convenient for both parties.”

“However, we have not been able to align our schedules,” the American official was content to say.

The president Recep Tayyip Erdogan postponed his visit to the White House, which was said to be on “lockdown” for on May 9a senior Turkish official told Bloomberg earlier.

The official claimed that “the postponement decision has been taken due to changes in Tayyip Erdogan’s program”.

As reported by Manolis Kostidisthe Turkish official added that the new date of the visit “will be discussed with his counterparts”.

The meeting that Erdogan had with the leader of Hamas Ismail Haniya in Istanbul and the strong support of the terrorist organization from Ankara does not like Washington at all. But there is other information, which states that Turkey is the one who does not want the meeting to take place, at least immediately, because the US has decided to give financial aid 26 billion dollars in Israel. On the other hand, the Turkish president’s inflammatory rhetoric against Israel, while supporting Hamas, also does not help the meeting to take place.

Early in the morning, however, the White House Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, had stated that there was no meeting with Erdogan in the American president’s schedule, although Bloomberg reported that the meeting with Biden was scheduled for May 9.

Although the White House had not officially announced Erdogan’s visit, a US official told Reuters in late March that a May 9 meeting had been proposed from the other side of the Atlantic, which Ankara had accepted.

If the meeting took place, then it would happen for Erdogan’s first visit to Washington since 2019, when he had met with then-President Donald Trump. Since 2021, when Joe Biden took office, the meetings he had with the Turkish president were only on the fringes of a summit.

US-Turkey relations have been strained for a long time due to differences on a number of issues. They have somewhat warmed up after Turkey gave the green light to Sweden’s NATO membership, but tensions remain over Syria, Russia and the war in Gaza.

“We will continue to see our brothers Hamas”

However, shortly before the postponement of Erdogan’s visit to the White House was announced, the Turkish president launched a fierce attack against the US.

“Because Israel and its Western supporters are asking for it, we will not be one of those who throw mud at Hamas and call it a terrorist organization… Let some people be disturbed, and let them change their facts. We will continue to see our brothers Hamas, who defend their homeland against the occupiers, as the National Resistance of Palestine” Turkish President Erdogan clarified, although the West and Israel treat Hamas as a terrorist organization.

The Turkish president was also sharp against the USA, saying that the “unconditional military, diplomatic support to Israel it does not contribute to the solution, but makes the problem worse.”

“The US, instead of making baseless allegations against Turkey about the events of 1915, they should look at Gaza. To see the genocide that Israel is attempting to commit in Gaza and to make efforts to stop it. We reject the West’s hypocritical policy on Gaza, which has exceeded the limits of our patience.”
