Dozens of tornadoes hit the central US on Friday, causing severe damage and injuring at least three people, according to authorities.

More than 70 tornadoes were recorded across the country, according to the US Weather Service (NWS), mostly around the city of Omaha in Nebraska and close to Iowa.

Photos taken by tornado chasers on social media show huge black tornadoes sweeping across the sky, blowing dust, dirt and anything else in their path.

Dozens of buildings were damaged, trains derailed and power lines cut.

In Elkhorn, its suburb Omahaphotos show houses flattened, roofs peeled off and trees stripped of leaves.

“Rescuers are continuing to check the affected residences and provide assistance to any injured,” Omaha police said in a statement.

Further south, near the town of Lincoln, a tornado struck an industrial shed which collapsed. About 70 people were in it and managed to get away, but three of them suffered minor injuries, Lancaster County authorities said.

The NWS issued several tornado warnings for various US states yesterday. He also predicts that the phenomenon will continue today and reach as far as Texas.

Tornadoes, a spectacular weather phenomenon that is difficult to predict, are relatively common in the US, especially in the central and southern parts of the country.
