Crowds of protesters gathered outside a central Washington hotel before the start of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, demanding that the US government stop supporting Israel in its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators with Palestinian flags and placards commemorating the deaths of journalists in Gaza urged guests to boycott the event.

President Joe Biden avoided the bulk of protesters at the hotel’s main entrance. However, a smaller group had anticipated the maneuver and waited for the presidential motorcade at the rear entrance, shouting slogans for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.

Security measures were draconian, due to the episodic pro-Palestinian protests that have occurred in recent days on several US university campuses.

The White House Correspondents’ Association was founded in 1914 and has held a dinner nearly every year since 1921 for reporters who cover the American presidency, while raising money for scholarships.
