Nine members of Colombia’s armed forces were killed when a helicopter crashed en route to Bolivar state (north), where the military is conducting operations against the country’s largest cocaine cartel, authorities said Monday.
“I mourn the death of the nine people on board a military helicopter that crashed while on its way to reinforce forces in the south, (in the province of) Bolivar, as part of operations against the Clan del Golfo,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro said via X.
Neither the president nor the armed forces have yet clarified the circumstances of the crash, including whether the 4,000-member criminal organization was involved, according to military intelligence.
However, an AFP source, who asked not to be named, said that the Mi-17 helicopter, of Soviet design, was involved in an accident while transporting supplies.
Among those on board were a lieutenant colonel, officers and non-commissioned officers, according to an armed forces post on X.
“There are no survivors,” the military told AFP.
In February, four military and five police officers died in helicopter crashes.
