The Russian-backed leader of Crimea said today that ATACMS long-range missiles were shot down over the peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Sergei Aksyonov posted a photo on Telegram showing what he described as missile submunitions ATACMS that have not been fired.

Aksyonov did not specify when or how many missiles were shot down.

The United States carried secrets in recent weeks long-range missiles in Ukrainewhich has used them twice so far, a US official said last week.

In its report, the BBC, which cited US officials, said that Ukraine had already started using, for the first time, long-range ATACMS ballistic missiles against Russia, which were secretly supplied by the US.

The weapons were sent as part of a previous US support package, and they arrived this month. U.S. officials clarified that they have not made any public announcements about maintaining the “operational security” of Ukraine.

ATACMS missiles have already been used at least once to strike Russian targets in occupied Crimea, the BBC reported.

The longer-range ATACMS gives Ukraine the ability to strike deeper into Russian-controlled areas. Especially bases, storage facilities and supply hubs.
