The American Federal Police (FBI) confirmed yesterday Friday (in the early hours of this morning Greek time) the information that three bodies were found in an area of northwestern Mexico where they were looking for three surfers, two Australians and an American, whose disappearance was reported a few days ago .

“We can confirm that three deceased persons have been found in Santo Tomas, Baja California,” a Mexican state that neighbors the US, the FBI told AFP, without disclosing their identities.

Mexican security forces earlier said they were stepping up search operations in this northwestern Mexican state, which has been plagued by cartel violence.

Two sources of the Reuters news agency close to the Mexican authorities later spoke about the discovery of the three bodies, also avoiding specifying whether they were the tourists.

Colum and Jake Robinson, brothers from Australia, and Jack Carter Road, a US citizen, were reported missing to authorities on April 29, the state attorney’s office said earlier this week. They were last seen on April 27.

They were vacationing in the town of Ensenada, about 45 kilometers from Santo Tomas, not far from the US-Mexico border.

The mother of the two Australians, Debra Robinson, reported via Facebook that they never moved into the property they had booked.

Earlier yesterday, searches were underway in rugged locations around Ensenada, according to city officials.

A prosecutor stated that an investigation is underway for three persons who may be related to the case, who were questioned. It is not yet clear if they are connected to the disappearance of the three tourists.

A “white pickup truck” and “other evidence” were located, the state attorney’s office said in a statement, noting that its investigation is coordinating with US and Australian authorities.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the disappearances “very concerning”.

Baja California, famous for its beaches, is among the states hardest hit by the wave of violence that has swept the country for years as rival gangs battle for influence.

In November 2015, two Australian surfers, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, were murdered in the state of Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico.
