A security loophole has allowed access to information about at least 6,000 meetings of the German military (Bundeswehr) on the Webex platform, according to a report by Zeit online, two months after a confidential military meeting was leaked through the same tool.

During the search carried out by Zeit online it was possible to access the title, date, time or name of the person inviting to important meetings of the Bundeswehr on Webex.

“More than 6,000 meetings were found online,” Zeit wrote. Some were classified, on the subject, for example, of long-range Taurus missiles demanded by Ukraine or “the digital battlefield”.

In addition, virtual meeting rooms available to 248,000 members of the German military were easily accessible, thanks to a simple digital architecture, and were not password protected. Zeit online found, among other things, the digital meeting room of Ingo Gerharts, the chief of the German Air Force.

His name was mentioned in March during the leak of a secret discussion between high-ranking Bundeswehr officers. Ingo Gerharts is among the military who did not use the Webex connection. The interception of this conversation by the Russian intelligence services had caused a scandal in Germany and had embarrassed Berlin vis-à-vis its allies.

According to Zeit Online, the German military did not become aware of the security gap until after journalists asked about it.

The loopholes themselves were revealed by Netzbegrünung, an association of cyber activists, according to Zeit.

A spokesman for the German military’s “cyber and information” command confirmed to AFP that the military’s Webex platform “presented a gap” and that it was fixed “within 24 hours” once it became known. But, at least 6,000 meetings later.

“It was not possible to participate in video conferences without the knowledge of the participants and without permission … no confidential content could therefore come out of the conferences,” the spokesperson assured.

According to Zeit online, the Webex system of Chancellor Olaf Solz, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy have the same flaws and that the media was able today to connect to the digital conference rooms of Olaf Solz and Deputy Prime Minister Robert Habeck.
