Starts tomorrow, Tuesday May 7, the second phase of the large-scale aeronautical exercise “Thalassolykos” of the Turkish armed forces in the Aegean, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Sea of ​​Marmara and the Black Sea.
This year, the first phase of the exercise was held at the same venue between January 7 and 16, while the second phase of the exercise, which begins tomorrow, will last until May 18.
In a press conference held today at the Turkish Navy headquarters in Golcuk, Propontis, the commander of the Turkish Fleet Operations Directorate, Admiral Kaan Turkkan, said that 100 surface ships, eight submarines, 39 aircraft, 16 helicopters, 28 unmanned aerial vehicles, seven unmanned vessels (including the new kamikaze boats), two teams of the Submarine Disaster Unit, three teams of the Undersea Operations Unit, six Coast Guard vessels, early warning aircraft and 15,000 personnel. The flagship of the Turkish fleet in the exercise will be the newly built mini aircraft carrier / amphibious operations vessel “Anadolu”.
During the exercise will take place and live fire training on May 12 and 13, while it will be preceded on May 11 by the hospitality of the distinguished visitors at the Aksaz naval station. In the last two days, on May 17 and 18, the ships taking part in the exercise will visit a total of 27 ports.
For the needs of the exercise, an operations center was created in which 104 naval personnel will take up duties.
Commander-in-Chief Turkkan explained that during the exercise, media management policy (TV, digital media, social media) will be simulated by the exercise operations center through the Turkish Armed Forces network.
As he mentioned, the aim of the exercise is to evaluate the effectiveness of the operational means and management of the Turkish Navy, to improve the operational capabilities, forecasting and decision-making mechanisms of the staff of the Navy headquarters and the units participating in the exercise in an environment multi-threat and testing interoperability with the other branches of the armed forces.
