“No one can deny this anti-Semitic rampage,” French Prime Minister Gabriel Atal said during a speech at the 38th dinner of the representative council of French Jewish institutions in Paris.
The French government announced on Monday that there was a “300% increase” in anti-Semitic acts in France in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
“No one can deny this anti-Semitic rampage,” French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said during a speech at the 38th dinner of the Council of Representatives of Jewish Institutions of France (Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France, CRIF) in Paris .
“No one can deny the fact that French Jews represent 1% of the French population, but over 60% of anti-religious offenses are anti-Semitic,” he continued.
It cited “366 anti-Semitic acts” recorded in France in the first quarter of 2024.
In the face of this rise, “not a single action should go unpunished, not an anti-Semite should stay quiet,” said the French prime minister, promising that “exemplary rigor” would be shown in any such case.
Stating that it is not possible, under French law, to reveal precisely the numbers and convictions of criminal offenses committed for religious reasons, he announced that he had asked Justice Minister Eric Dupont-Moretti “to find a way to record the of these cases everywhere”, throughout the country.
“Islamism is a very serious danger to our Republic and one of the most dangerous, most destructive versions of anti-Semitism,” he also said, vowing to “attack head-on” Islamism and any intolerant ideology that divides French society.
