Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni went to Tripoli, Libya today, where she met with the president of the presidential council, Mohamed al-Menfi, and with the prime minister of the government of national unity, Abdulahmid Dbeiba.

According to a statement from the Italian government, Meloni underlined that her country wishes to continue cooperation with Libya, on an equal basis, mainly in the fields of energy and infrastructure.

At the same time, he referred to the need to announce parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya, within the framework of UN mediation, which he believes should be given a new impetus. The government of Rome also pledged to continue making efforts aimed at achieving a common line of the international community and promoting the cooperation of this North African country with the European Union.

Afterwards, the Italian Prime Minister went to Benghazi, where with General Khalifa Haftar she discussed Italian initiatives concerning the health and agriculture sectors and expressed Italy’s willingness to contribute to the reconstruction of the city of Derna (thanks to the special knowledge of the private sector ) which was hit by deadly floods last year.

The Italian Prime Minister, as underlined in the announcement of the government of Rome, expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by the cooperation of the two countries in the immigration field. “Meloni – it is added, finally – considers it essential to continue efforts to combat human trafficking at the regional level”, which is also a key objective for the Italian rotating presidency of the G7, the Group of Seven most industrially developed countries countries.
