The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky fired the head of the State Guard, the agency found responsible for his assassination attempt this week.

Zelensky dismissed with his decree Sergio Rude without naming his replacement.

The SBU security service reported earlier this week that two men, colonels in the State Guard, were arrested; who are accused of plotting the assassination of Zelensky and other top officials of the country. The responsibility of the State Guard is the safety of public figures. According to the SBU, the two officers “carried confidential information” to Russia and intended to recruit security service personnel to take a hostage and kill Zelensky.

The SBU says the murders it would be a “gift” for Vladimir Putin for his swearing-in on Tuesday for another term in the Kremlin.

The two men are believed to have been recruited by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). They were tasked with finding someone near the presidential guard who would take Zelensky hostage and later kill him. There is no indication of how advanced the plan was and at what point it was thwarted. Moscow has not commented on the SBU’s announcements.

Zelensky said last year that the security services had prevented it at least five Russian assassination attempts on him.

According to the SBU, the group’s goal was also to kill the head of Ukraine’s security service, Vasil Maliuk as well as Kirill Budanov, the head of military intelligence.
