THE North Macedonia is bound by International Law by “Agreement of Prespa”he stated representative of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairsanswering a question from APE-MPE regarding the use by newly elected President of the country Gordana Silianovska-Davkova of the term “Macedonia” during her swearing-in. The representative also emphasized that “it is important that North Macedonia continues its path towards the EU and implements the required reforms”.

“Here things are very clear: There is an agreement of International Law, the so-called “Prespa Agreement”, with Greece and North Macedonia is bound by it according to International Law”, said the representative of the ministry, Christian Wagner, while being asked to to comment on whether there could be consequences for North Macedonia’s accession process to the European Union, he limited himself to stating that he did not wish to take a position on “potentially hypothetical” issues. He underlined, however, that “it is obvious that the Western Balkans should become part of the EU” and that “we as a federal government are very active (on this), because we cannot tolerate gray areas in Europe and, if we leave these gray areas, these will be covered by others.” In that sense, added Mr. Wagner, “we support this policy in the Balkans and I would not like to start speculating on how it might develop for individual states in the Balkans.”

Referring to the recent elections in North Macedonia, the spokesman said that the federal government has been informed and “is willing to continue working with the government in Skopje, which has not yet been formed.” “It will be important for North Macedonia to continue its path towards the EU and implement the required reforms. In this, North Macedonia can continue to rely on Germany’s support,” concluded Mr. Wagner.
