With sharp language, the Vice-President of the Commission, Margaritis Schinas, in the letter he sent today to the management of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), expresses his regret for the fact that the EU flag was banned in the final Eurovision Song Contest and asks for an explanation .

The Vice-President of the Commission, responsible, among other things, for cultural policy in the EU, in his letter to the EBU, which was seen by APE-MPE, points out that for almost seven decades Eurovision embodies the values of diversity and cultural exchange – values shared and supported by the EU and expresses its “regret” at “the policy implemented by the EBU this year to prohibit participants from flying the EU flag during the final Eurovision Song Contest”.

“Such actions have cast a shadow over what is meant to be a joyous event for peoples across Europe and the world to come together in celebration. Less than a month before the European elections and in times of geopolitical turmoil, with the EU being targeted by malicious and authoritarian actors, the EBU’s decision has contributed to the discrediting of a symbol that unites all Europeans”, says M. Schoinas in his letter . Instead, it points out that at the Paris 2024 Olympics, “the IOC has allowed EU flags to be displayed in all venues and award ceremonies”.

“The inconsistency in the EBU’s stance has left me and many millions of your viewers wondering what and who the Eurovision Song Contest is for,” the Commission Vice-President stressed, asking the EBU management to explain the reasoning behind it. the decision.
