The head of Hezbollah said in an interview that the residents of northern Israel will not return for the start of the new school year
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said Monday that residents of northern Israel will not be able to return to their homes for the start of the next school year if their government continues its assault on Gaza.
Hezbollah is exchanging fire with the Israeli army on Lebanon’s southern border alongside the Gaza war. The militant group has opened a parallel front in Israel both to support its ally, the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and to prevent Israel from launching an attack on Lebanon.
In a televised address on Monday, Hassan Nasrallah reiterated that his group will continue to fight as Israel continues its assault on Gaza.
“The connection between the supportive Lebanese front and Gaza is final, final and final,” he said. “No one will be able to disconnect her.”
The fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border and raised fears of a wider war between the heavily armed rivals.
Israel has said it wants to secure the north so residents can return home, either through a diplomatic deal or a military strike against Lebanon. Families displaced from northern Israel had hoped to return to their homes by September 1 for the start of the school year.
Nasrallah addressed the displaced on Friday, saying: “if you want to solve the issue, go to your government and tell them to stop the war in Gaza.”
