The collision caused an oil spill into the Gulf, officials said in a statement. The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to the spill and will determine its extent while beginning “containment and cleanup procedures,” officials said. Galveston’s Office of Emergency Management said vacuum gas oil, which can be used to make transportation fuel and other byproducts, could be seen in the water.
The barge has a capacity of about 30,000 gallons, officials said. The amount leaked is unknown.
