The head of European diplomacy, Joseph Borrell, on Wednesday denounced the call made by the Ukrainian pro-Russian separatists in Moscow to offer them military assistance, in which he saw a serious threat to Ukraine.
“The call for help in Moscow from the separatist separatist regions known as LDN / LDL (acronyms for the self-proclaimed Democratic Republics of Danetsk and Lugansk) heralds a further dangerous step for national sovereignty, “It will put thousands of lives at risk,” Mr Borel said via Twitter.
“The EU strongly urges Russia to refrain from any new escalation,” he added.
The Kremlin announced yesterday that it had received an appeal for military assistance from officials in the two autonomous regions of eastern Ukraine in order to “repel” the Ukrainian army.
The aid was requested “on the basis” of the friendship agreements signed this week between the “People’s Republics” and Moscow, which open the door to the presence of Russian troops in the rebel territories, a Kremlin spokesman said.
The leaders of the 27 EU Member States will meet today in Brussels to examine the “latest developments” in the Ukrainian crisis, following the adoption of the first package of European financial sanctions.
The summit will consider ways to hold “Russia accountable for its actions” and offer support to Ukraine.
