Climate change will be a lower priority in Florida and largely disappear from the state statute under legislation signed Wednesday, May 15 by Gov.
The White House and Democratic elected officials criticized strongly yesterday Thursday a new law promoted in Florida and approved a day earlier by the Republican governor Ron DeSandis, as it entails the elimination from all official texts of the state of any mention of climate change.
This bill is a “shame”, commented the spokeswoman for the presidency, Karin Jean-Pierre.
“Climate change is an undeniable fact” said Frederica Wilson, a Democrat who was elected in Florida to the House of Representatives.
The southeastern state, known for its near-permanent sunshine, recorded record temperatures last summer.
Which didn’t stop Ron DeSandis, the hapless Republican nominee to run in the Nov. 5 presidential election — defeated by Donald Trump in the process — from defending the law, which satisfies not a few climate change skeptics in ranks of supporters of the American right.
“The legislation I am authorizing (…) will keep wind farms off our beaches, fuel in our tanks, and China out of our state,” the governor commented with satisfaction.
“We are restoring common sense with our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of radical environmental fanatics,” added Mr DeSandis, who had campaigned against lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic and opposes the rights granted to transgender persons.
