The fierce reaction of the Chinese government was caused by the presence of a representative of the United States at the inauguration of the President of Taiwan Lai Ching-te, with the representative of the Chinese government saying that the US is sending “wrong messages to the separatist forces of Taiwan independence”.

In particular, the representative of the Chinese government stated that “we strongly oppose any form of official exchanges between the Taiwan region, the United States and other countries that have diplomatic relations with China. We strongly condemn any interference in Taiwan’s affairs under any pretext or by any means.”

“We urge the US side and other countries to immediately correct their mistakes and stop sending wrong messages to the separatist forces seeking ‘Taiwan independence,'” he added.

In the same statement, the Chinese government spokesman added that “the efforts of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities to seek foreign support for independence and the intervention of external forces will not stop China’s irrevocable pursuit of reunification.”
