“Europe is currently experiencing some of the darkest hours of World War II,” EU High Representative Joseph Borel said in a statement to the press on the occasion of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As he characteristically stated, the EU will respond in the strongest way, announcing the imposition of severe sanctions against Russia.
He even added that the EU will immediately plan emergency aid for Ukraine.
The statement of Joseph Borrell in detail:
Europe is currently experiencing some of its darkest hours since World War II. A major nuclear power has attacked a neighboring country and is threatening retaliation against any other country trying to help it.
This is not only the most serious violation of international law, but also a violation of basic principles of human coexistence. It has high costs in human lives and unknown consequences for the future.
The European Union will respond in the strongest possible way. The President of the European Council [Σαρλ] Michel asked the European Council to meet tonight. They will agree and provide political guidance for the adoption of the strongest package and the toughest sanctions package we have ever implemented.
As the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, I will liaise with our partners around the world to make the international community fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and to make a firm and united call for an immediate end to this unacceptable behavior and the Russian leadership to face unprecedented isolation.
It is not a matter of coalitions, but of diplomatic games of power. It is a matter of life and death. It concerns the future of our global community.
We will be united with our transatlantic partners and with all European nations to defend this position. United, we say no to violence and destruction as a means of gaining political benefits.
We, the European Union, remain the strongest group of nations in the world. And this should not be underestimated. We will immediately plan emergency aid for Ukraine, which is in this dire situation.
We will also work to support evacuation operations, and for our personnel, in the areas affected by the Russian attack.
The European Union, together with its transatlantic and allied partners, has made unprecedented efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the security crisis caused by Russia, but Russia has not responded to these efforts and has instead unilaterally chosen the serious and premeditated escalation of the war.
The president [της Ρωσίας, Βλαντιμίρ] Putin must stop this pointless attack. Today, our thoughts go to the people of Ukraine. We stand next to him.
