The four-day poll, which closed on Monday, showed just 36% of Americans approving of Biden’s performance as president, down from 38% in April
The president’s approval rating Joe Biden fell this month to its lowest level in two years, a worrying sign ahead of November’s presidential election, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The four-day poll concluded on Monday and showed that only 36% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance as president, from 38% in April. The same low was last recorded in July 2022. While the two-point drop from April is within the poll’s margin of error (plus/minus 3 points), it may bode ill for Biden which he will face in November with Republican Donald Trump.
Nationwide, Democrat Biden scores about the same as Trump on the question of who voters would choose. But Trump is slightly ahead in many state polls which are likely to determine the winner.
The latest poll shows Biden’s weaknesses but some strengths. The state of the economy is considered a top issue with 23% of respondents saying it is the country’s most important problem. About 21% consider political extremism and 13% immigration as a top issue.
About 40% said Trump had a better policy on the economy (30% for Biden) while the rest said they didn’t know or didn’t answer the question.
Trump leads significantly on immigration, with 42% favoring his approach and 25% favoring Biden’s policy. The latter is slightly ahead in managing political extremism (34% vs. Trump’s 30%).
Regarding foreign wars and terrorism, 36% think Trump is better for dealing with them while 29% prefer Biden.
