The recognition of a Palestinian state by three European countries is a historic moment, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) announced today, seeing it as “the path to stability, security and peace in the region”.

This is “a historic moment of triumph for the free world (…) after long decades of Palestinian national struggle, suffering, pain, racism, murder, oppression, mistreatment and destruction to which the people of Palestine have been subjected” underlined Hussein al-Sheikh, general secretary of the Executive Committee of the OAP, in his post on social media X.

At the same time, the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas expressed its satisfaction with the recognition of a Palestinian state by Ireland, Spain and Norway, which described it as an “important step”.

“We consider this an important step towards validating our right to the land and establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” Hamas said in a statement, calling on “countries around the world to recognize the legitimate national rights” of Palestinians.

The “courageous resistance” of the Palestinians led three countries (Norway, Ireland and Spain) to recognize the state of Palestine, Bassem Naim, a member of the political office of the Palestinian Islamist movement, told AFP at the same time.

“These successive recognitions are the direct result of this brave resistance and the historic persistence of the Palestinian people, we believe that this is a turning point in the international position on the Palestinian issue,” Naim noted.
