“China is closely monitoring the latest situation and we urge all parties to show restraint and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a news conference where Beijing repeatedly condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The Beijing has followed a cautious line for Ukraine as Moscow rallied thousands of troops at the border and criticized the West for new sanctions after Russia ordered troops into two breakaway Ukrainian regions it now recognizes as independent.
Hua declined to describe the military action as “invasive”, calling it “biased” and avoiding questions about whether China was in contact with Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
“The issue of Ukraine has a very complex historical background and was the result of” various factors, “Hua told reporters.
China has accused the United States and its Western allies in recent weeks of “inciting” the crisis, with Hua saying in an earlier statement Wednesday that the United States was “adding fuel to the fire.”
