London, Thanasis Gavos

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced an election on July 4 in the United Kingdom after an emergency cabinet meeting.

Speaking in the rain outside Number 10 Downing Street, Mr Sunack said it was time for Britain to choose its future.

He said he asked King Charles to dissolve parliament so that elections could be held on July 4.

In his speech, the outgoing British Prime Minister focused on his achievements in securing economic stability, namely the growth rate of the economy and today’s announcement of a reduction in inflation to a three-year low of 2.3%.

He mentioned the war in Ukraine and immigration as challenges for the next government. “You have to choose in the election who has the plan to meet these challenges,” he said to British citizens.

He was proud of what had been achieved, although he admitted that not everything was done right and criticized the Labor Party for not having a plan.

In particular, starting his remarks, Rishi Sunak said that “in the last five years the country has faced many challenges and I would never let people face the difficulties alone. Many forget what we faced”, while he added that “I wanted to lead the country to restore economic stability”.

“Financial stability is the foundation of all future success. Whether it is an increase in wages and good jobs, investments in our public services or the defense of the country,” he said.

“And because of our collective sacrifice and your hard work, we have reached two important milestones in securing this stability, showing that when we work together anything is possible.”
