“This borderline incident is part of a wider pattern of challenging behaviour”
THE European Union denounced her act of Russia to remove the border markers on the Narva River that mark the border with Estonia.
A total of 24 of the 50 markers placed to mark sailing routes were removed in the early hours of Thursday, Estonian officials said, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell saying “such actions are unacceptable”.
“This border incident is part of a broader pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia, including along its maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region,” it said in a statement.
Russia is using border issues as a means to create fear and anxiety,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas said at a news conference in Tallinn on Thursday. “We will approach this incident soberly, in a balanced way, if necessary and in communication with partners and allies”.
According to Kalas, Estonia contacted Russia to get information on this matter. “This is a border incident, the exact circumstances of which we are trying to clarify,” he told reporters. “Russia is escalating border incidents to sow fear and anxiety to spread insecurity within our societies. We see a general trend in this.”
