EU leaders will announce sanctions against Belarus for its support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a leaked text of the summit.
A draft by the Guardian, which will be finalized by EU leaders later Thursday night, condemns “Belarus’ involvement in this aggression against Ukraine” and calls on Minsk to abide by its international obligations.
The document states:
The European Council [των ηγετών της ΕΕ] Calls for the rapid preparation of a further package of sanctions, including Belarus.
Belarus is already subject to EU sanctions targeting individuals and sectors of its economy following the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters by President Alexander Lukashenko in 2020.
The draft text reiterates EU warnings that Russia will be hit with further sanctions that “have enormous and serious consequences” – but does not specify what those measures are. This must be agreed by the meeting of the 27 EU leaders in Brussels.
